Ikea As Art

At last week’s exhibitIKEA event we were able to see the results of this challenge: four regional artists had to discover new methods to work with as well as screen Ikea products.

Fashion designer David Dixon utilized his garments style skills to produce a quite collection of womenswear utilizing by-the-metre material the business sells. (The gown on the left is a style he means to utilize in his spring 2012 line. This version is made with the Kajsastina fabric, at $6 per metre.) “People typically utilize their material to make pillow covers as well as bags,” he says. David debated between two colours schemes — brights as well as bolds, or neutrals. “I chose to choose the neutrals since it’s much more me. It’s softer.”

To screen choose pieces he chose a spacious dressing room, featuring a large area of wardrobe space. The affordable Varmluft shades produced a warm glow when packed firmly together on the ceiling. A shag rug, accessories table as well as clean-lined chairs in coordinating colours complemented the design. Each wardrobe door featured a motivational message on the top glass pane, as well as inside each door were hangers with much more inspiring thoughts hanging from the pant clips. “It’s about enthusiasm as well as being who you are, as well as what’s truly behind the door,” discusses David.

Inspired by Giorgio Morandi, the late Italian still-life painter, professional photographer George Whiteside produced vignettes utilizing Ikea products. many are grouped by colour — “I’m the monochromatic-type, for the most part” — as well as there are small variations within each. “I liked the shapes, as the objects are extremely sculptural as well as not awfully recognizable [once grouped],” he says. “It takes you away from the actual function of the objects.”

After taking shots of 200 variations, he scanned a water-damaged notebook as well as utilized the different scans to frame the photos. The rounded notebook corners were well-suited to the rounded edges of the Ödby frames. Talk about a diy art project!

As for artist Bruno Billio, he produced a distinct sculpture utilizing Ikea chairs, as well as Thrush Holmes, an artist as well as painter, put together a colourful house that featured words etched into clean-lined furniture. As David says, “The display is right here to influence people to believe outside the box.”
